What can you learn?

The SCA Barista Skills Courses focus on all aspects related to making espresso-based coffee. Starting off with the Foundation Course, it focuses on the fundamentals but goes deeper and deeper into the science of coffee when doing the Intermediate and Professional Courses.

(Max 40 CSP Points)

The Sensory Courses sensitize the student on the notion of specialty vs non-specialty coffee. Enabling the student to recognize the core concepts of sensory analysis, and explain why and how coffee professionals use it in the coffee industry. Broad focus will be put on identifying, describing objectively the different taste and body in coffees. Students will be introduced in the SCA cupping protocol and methodology to reflect on the qualitative dimension of this evaluation method.

These Brewing courses dive into the endless opportunities there are for manual brewing. At first, it introduces core brewing techniques for a variety of manual coffee brewers as well as the different variables faced while brewing coffee manually. But then throughout the Intermediate and Professional courses, they take an in-depth and scientific look at the essentials of brewing coffee.

Learn about coffee’s journey from its origins in Ethiopia to the major commodity it is today. From growing the cherries through grading, roasting, and brewing, this module provides an overview of the coffee value chain.

Meet your Trainer

Stevo Kuhn 

Founder and Head Trainer

With Stevo’s passion for coffee and his degree in Education, teaching is second nature to him. He loves to educate people, especially in the area of coffee. Stevo is the 2023 SA Barista Champion, and is set to take part in the World Barista Championship taking place in Athens, Greece from 22-24 June 2023. He was also SA’s runner-up at the 2020 Barista Champs and represented South Africa at the 2021 World Barista Championship in Milan. He has won the South African Barista Trainer of the Year award for two consecutive years (2020 and 2021) and continues to aim for even higher achievements. Stevo also completed his SCA (CSP) Coffee Diploma in 2021 and is a registered AST in Barista Skills, Brewing, and Sensory.

How much do the courses cost?
  1. Baseline/Home Barista or Brewing: R1550 pp
  2. Foundation Course of any specialisation: R2550 pp
  3. Intermediate Course: R4950 pp
  4. Professional Course: R7950 pp

Can I complete my SCA Coffee Diploma at your academy?

Yes, we offer all the SCA levels in the specialisations of Brewing, Barista Skills and Sensory. And by completing all these 9 courses your will have enough points (120 to be exact) and will receive your CSP Coffee Diploma

Do I need to have any coffee experience in order to do the SCA Course?

The good news is, no. You can jump directly into the SCA Foundation courses without any prior knowledge of coffee. The Foundation Courses are set up in such a way that any person no matter the amount of their coffee knowledge, will be able to do the course!
